At the start of October I had the honour for host a live QPR for new football events promoters New Goal Dream (not so simple minds these guys). Billed as 3 Of R Own, though we got an extra icon on the night.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Lee Cook, Martin Rowlands, Kevin Gallen and Marc Bircham (who came to watch but we got up on stage too) in The Boston Room at The George IV in Chiswick – its the home the influential Blue Flowers night and the same stage I saw Jamie T play on as an acoustic bass wielding, solo artist months before he got signed… Adele played once too.
The topic of our discussion with the footballers was ‘what is it like to play for the club you support’, as remarkably in the modern game the quartet were all boyhood fans who eventually pulled on the famous blue and white superhoops and played in the same side in the mid to late 2000s – although Kevin Gallen’s first spell at the club saw him make his debut in 1994 just as the Premier League was getting into full swing.
Along with discussing their individual careers, the seasons they played together in the same team, the unique camaraderie in their squad which has left them life-long friends post and a novel way of sorting Djibril Cissé’s luxury deliveries to the training ground, as a season ticket holder who had watched the four play (and the father of an eight-year-old who carefully picks which current player he wants on his replica shirt each season) it was unique to hear about how they interwove their love for the club with playing for it.
A great night, and hopefully the first foray into more live Q&As on that stage. There should be more football/QPR things to come, but perhaps I should try to lure Jamie T back for a chat at some point too…
